The question was brought up in my technology class about whether or not the entertainment world does enough to speak out against bullying. We know Ellen Degeneres is doing A LOT to bring this issue to people's attention and to truly voice her concerns and urge celebrities to share their stories to viewers to encourage people to be kinder to one another. My professor brought up Taylor Swift's performance on the Grammy's for her song "Mean" and how it really sends a positive message to viewers and fans. I've always loved Taylor Swift and think she's the perfect role model. Her songs are full of positive messages and she sets such a wonderful example for young girls who truly admire her. Her video for "Mean" shows the stories of teenagers who are teased and grow up to lead very successful lives. Here is the link to her video:

What are your thoughts about her video and the message it's sending to people everywhere?

  1. I think that Taylor Swift is a role model that many people should look up to. Her video "Mean" portrays the fact that you should always pursue your dreams and believe in yourself no matter what others have to say about you. Her video touches on several topics of being not fitting into the social norm, but at the end of the day it's the diversity that makes us who we are. As for her performance at the Grammy's for those who watched; she changed her lyrics about someday singing at the grammys in addition to taking home 2 grammy awards. This just goes to show you can take bullying positively or negatively and when you are able to use it as a motivator, there is no end to what you can accomplish.

  2. Taylor Swift is awesome and this song just goes to show you to never give up. No matter what people say about you while you're growing up you can show them they're wrong by being a success.

  3. Another artist you guys may be interested in looking at is Lady Gaga. She has also spoken up about issues with bullying and teasing that she faced while she was in school, and she has made a very successful career for herself. Many may think that she is too eccentric or 'different,' but I feel like this is her way of embracing her individuality to the world, and I think it's awesome. She reaches out to her fans to never feel alone and to embrace who they are, and I think that she is also a great role model.

    1. I do think Lady Gaga is a great role model. Some may think she's quite eccentric, but her uniqueness is what makes her who she is and it's obvious she embraces that about herself. It's good for kids who are being bullied to hear from celebrities who have experienced similar circumstances. It's important to note that some of these celebrities are still bashed even in their careers. Unfortunately, bullying doesn't always stop once school is over. I'm glad more and more people are taking a stand against all the bullying going on in the world.

  4. Taylor Swift makes music her means of communicating with people of all ages, but especially with the young. The fact that her songs are all original portrayals of events and people from her own life makes her message even more believable. People tend to not only listen to, but connect with people who share their personal stories. To this end, musicians all share such a powerful tool, which, if used appropriately, could change the world.
