As I've been posting comments on this blog and focusing on digital citizenship and cyberbullying, I keep coming back to this song by Rascal Flatts so I thought I would share it with all of you. The lyrics are tragically beautiful which tell the story of a seventeen year-old who committed suicide due to depression and situations he/she felt had no escape. Teenagers and young children sometimes can't see past Friday night and unfortunately feel as though their problems have no solutions. It's devastating when kids, as Rascal Flatts put it, "walk away in the middle of a song."

What are your thoughts about this video and song?
Thanks for sharing that video Diana, it was very touching. I thought in particular the lyrics where they sing "Oh, I had no clue you were masking
ReplyDeleteA troubled soul, oh, God only knows what went wrong" were an important part of the song. You never know what people are going through because in public they may be masking their feelings. Thats why I believe you should always treat people with respect and kindness because you don't know what terrible things they may be going through in their personal lives, and what you say could or do could possible break them down even more.
Dan, I completely agree. I am a firm believer in giving people the benefit of the doubt, because you never really know what is going on in their lives, and your reaction to a situation could either help save them or push them even further. I think this video should also really push us as human beings to be aware of warning signs of suicide so that we can hopefully recognize them if they ever become apparent in someone.
DeleteThat is a great song for raising awareness of the problem of teenage suicide. I can see how cyber bullying can further alienate teenager's that are suffering from depression and other illnesses. Also with so many venues on the internet to express feelings and thoughts it's important for us as good digital citizens to do our part to report any posts or comments we may see that are of the suicidal nature to the proper authorities. The lyric's "I had no clue you were masking a troubled soul" really hit's home, the person may not be showing symptoms to their family, but maybe they are venting by other means through internet forums or social media sites. That's why doing your part as a digital citizen is so important. You may save a life.
ReplyDeleteIt's disheartening to read or hear about children who take their own lives. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the young mind is so malleable and thus, vulnerable to anything that might influence his or her thoughts, in both positive and negative ways. Controlling (to the best of a parent's ability)what your child listens to or reads on the internet can only help them not become victims to predators looking to bully or convince them to bring harm to themselves.
ReplyDeleteI think this song tells a desperately sad story of not only one kid but many who follow-through with this horrible feeling to end their lives or at least contemplaint suicide. It's a tremendous thing, to see celebreties and bands getting involved. They are the ones our children look up to and admire. This can be a magicalal tool to help support kids and begin a conversation.
